In honour of Women’s month in South Africa, Salaamedia celebrated the work I do by inviting me on the station as a Women’s Month Ambassador. This was a humbling opportunity to host a 2-hour radio show to amplify the work I do. As a guest presenter, I was given the liberty to put together a programme within my activism work or anything that I am passionate about. I gladly leaned into the prospect of shining a light on emotional wellbeing and mental health.

The show put emotional wellbeing front and centre. I also highlighted the role of support in our overall health.

At the very core of the work I do, is the theme of healing through support, inclusion, and creating safe spaces for engagement around topics that are otherwise deemed taboo and thus stigmatized.

At my private practise in Sandton, I see women overcoming all kinds of challenges from anxiety and severe depression – to the productive Muslimah trying to get a handle on her busy schedule and acquiring tools to better manage her life. In the support group my husband and I facilitate, we work with people that have fallen into domestic abusive cycles, that are looking for the resources and support to get them out.

I shared with the listeners how I have gauged after working in the wellness arena, that people are hungry for healing and are looking for tools and methodologies that can aid in their wellbeing so that they can thrive.

With so many non-traditional forms of therapies entering the space of mental and emotional healing, there’s a modality out there that can really cater to the needs of pretty much anyone.

Looking more into the alternate modalities, I unpacked the need for tending to our emotional health and chatted to some incredible women working in the field. We delved into the impact of our emotional experiences in our bodies. We explored the role of support and healthy self-coping mechanisms and learned how to connect with the Qur’aan for solace and comfort.

The show was exhilarating and reminded me just how much I enjoyed media. It was a delight to put my radio hosting skills back to use, but this time, to talk about the work that I’ll never tire of. The work of healing and creating ripples of healing the world over.

You can watch all 4 parts of the show here (there’s even a part where I choke on air-lol, I’m fine now):

Part 1: Sumaiyah and Nadia (Why is there a growing trend in healing and women’s empowerment? What does it look like on the ground?)
Part 2: Penny Norman (The role support plays in healing)
Naeera Abed (Emotional Health and healing related to mind-body connection)
Dilnawaaz Sayanvala (Healing and support through the Qur’aan and establishing our relationship with our Creator)
